Job Details

Reporting to the Manager of Safety, this role supports safety and compliance for our National Tank Service (NTS) shop and tank wash operations, which represent our facility-based maintenance and cleaning side of the business.

We are seeking a proactive and hands-on Safety Specialist to champion a practical, high-trust safety culture through direct engagement with frontline teams and facility leadership. This role will focus on conducting audits and inspections, delivering in-person training and emergency drills, executing corrective actions, and supporting product-handling quality and regulatory compliance.

The Safety Specialist, (National Tank Service) will be responsible for making practical safety improvements such as buying a sign and installing it; taking action to implement fixes rather than simply recommending them. This role will work closely with Shop and Wash Rack Managers, Operations, the Certified Industrial Hygienist, and Customers to ensure safety standards are upheld and continuously improved.

Who You Are

  • Proven experience conducting safety activities in industrial settings, including audits, inspections, and corrective action implementation.
  • Strong training and facilitation skills; confident leading drills and installing practical safety controls.
  • Clear and effective communicator with technicians, supervisors, and customers; demonstrates a proactive, ownership driven approach to safety.
  • HAZWOPER or equivalent spill response training is an advantage.
  • Experience with industrial hygiene sampling basics with Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) guidance is an added advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Drills while on‑site: Conduct and document fire and confined space entry drills; ensure equipment availability and readiness.
  • Fit testing: Maintain respirator fit‑testing equipment; perform fit tests and records; support respiratory protection program.
  • Training certifications: Act as Certified Forklift Trainer; deliver forklift training/certification. Act as Certified CPR/AED Instructor (at least in the U.S.) and deliver courses.
  • In‑person training: Deliver practical training while on‑site (hazcom, LOTO, confined space, PPE, hot work, spill response).
  • Plans & procedures: Write Emergency Action Plans and other localized regulatory policies; maintain site safety binders and signage.
  • Audits & inspections: Perform facility/equipment/permit inspections; generate findings; execute corrective actions promptly (don’t just assign).
  • Investigations (lower severity): Assist with fact‑finding and implement corrective actions; escalate patterns and high‑risk issues.
  • Customer & operations support: Prepare for customer audits, participate in reviews/toolbox talks, and provide simple, plain‑language guidance.
  • Reporting: Log JTOs/interactions, training completions, drill outcomes, and corrective actions; keep documentation audit‑ready.
  • Support: Support operations team members, this position cannot take an “audit on the desk” approach.
  • This position is based in Mississauga/Montreal (Eastern Canada) and Houston, Texas.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Transportation Safety, Industrial Operations, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive safety experience in shop, terminal, or industrial environments, with a strong focus on hands-on field execution and operational safety practices.
  • Working knowledge of key safety programs and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work, respiratory protection, powered industrial trucks, and product-handling protocols.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) for Houston is an asset.
  • Holds or is eligible to obtain relevant safety certifications, such as Forklift Trainer, CPR/AED Instructor (U.S.), and Respirator Fit-Testing Competence, within a defined timeframe.

ACCOUNTABILITY METRICS

  • 100% technician interaction in responsible area (measured by JTOs, training, etc.).
  • Annual facility audit completed at each supported location.
  • Critical training completion (tracked & reported).
  • ≥90% corrective‑action completion for inspections, audits, and investigations.
